Multi-accents can be amusing

Greetings, readers!

I was randomly re-watching various things with European actors. For a few instances, the actors are supposedly Americans, and thus need to (try to) adjust their natural accents.

I always find it amusing when that happens, as they do not entirely succeed.

For example, the trailer for “Gracepoint” (which is a remake of the BBC show “Broadchurch”) includes David Tennant doing a reasonably admirable job of an American accent. However, you can still catch some of his native accent throughout. (He does not come into the trailer until about a minute in. Minute 3 is one of the more noticeable points.)

That was one of the subtler times.

There is also a 2-part episode of Doctor Who that features a British actor somewhat trying to sound American. The episode is “The Impossible Astronaut.” The actor is Mark Sheppard. The character is former FBI agent Canton Delaware III.

Once more, the actor does an admirable job of impersonating an American accent. However, there are quite a number of times that his native London accent show through.

I find it amusing.

Have a lovely Sunday!

Something that pleased me today

Greetings, readers!

Today, I ran an experiment on a search engine. I have seen the Joss Whedon show “Firefly”, and for some reason the word “Saffron” came to mind. Thus, the character “Saffron” came to mind, but I could not remember the weird mash-up Captain Mal calls her. I remembered it started with “Yosaf”, so I started entering that into the search engine. The engine provided, and brought “Yosaffbridge” as the first suggestion.

I found that pleasing.

I hope you have a great day.

A Professor after my own heart…

Greetings, readers!

Recently, a professor’s extra credit question on an exam has been making the rounds. I highly approve of this question, and do not think it cruel at all. It is an excellent study in game theory, and I would greatly enjoy seeing the data on this. It would be further interesting to analyze whether or not there were differences (in general) from students who did better or worse in the class over all.

What are your thoughts?

New “Hunger Games” Propaganda — effective

Note: If this is your first time to TotalFluff, please visit this brief explanation. Thanks!

Greetings, readers!

I am postponing the Webmaster’s current plans for today’s post, in light of a very interesting update from the franchise of “The Hunger Games”.

In case you were not aware– starting with one of the earlier movies, the studio producing the Hunger Games movies put out a series of “in-universe” propaganda videos. (They were presented as though the propaganda was to members of the Hunger Games world. It was very effective for those who were familiar with the universe.)

Yesterday, there was a new propaganda video released.

What I found especially fantastic, (in addition to it pointing out the theoretical implications of how District 13 may be turning into a “Capitol Look-Alike”) was the subversion of the Mockingjay symbol.

For those of you who do not remember, this is what the transition from the book “Catching Fire” to “Mockingjay” looked like:

If you look at the end of the new propaganda piece, you should notice that now the Mockingjay’s “wings” have turned into the soldiers of war.

I thought that was a really cool effect.

Enjoy your Friday!

A season finale that did not ruin the show!

Greetings, readers!

These past few days, I have been what I believe your world calls “binge-watching” the Netflix show Daredevil. Last night, I finished what was available.

I really enjoyed the show. It was interesting, had deeper ideas to think about, and yet was still basically a superhero show.

One thing I especially appreciated about it is that the season finale did not leave a pointlessly stupid cliffhanger as a come-on for the next season. It was open-ended enough for me to be anticipating the next season, but did not do so by throwing any of the infuriating “curve-balls” that some other shows (such as Once Upon a Time) have. Furthermore, the characters were generally fairly consistent.

I rather recommend this show.*

Have a great day!

*Please note, this is a rather more violent and gory show than many. If such things bother you, you probably do better not watching Daredevil.

Belatedly in Honor of Escher

Greetings, readers!

This is a slightly belated post. However, it is still potentially reasonable.

Apparently, there was an artist on your world named Escher. He did some rather bizarre (and neat) architectural style paintings and such. Apparently, if he were still alive, it would have been his birthday a few days ago.

In honor of him, here is a gallery of some of his famous works.

Have a great weekend.
